Hand Tied Design
The classic hand tied design can be more difficult than it looks. The goal of a hand tied design is to have the flowers evenly mixed around the whole design and again creating an even "dome". It is okay to have flowers and foliage protruding from this dome, but you want to watch for buds that have sunken in further than others. This design is more difficult than others, but can be seen and used in a wide variety of occasions. Because this hand tied design can be viewed from any angle, it works as a centerpiece as well. When researching these designs it is easy to find examples in bridal bouquets, and most female Pinterest users are guilty of pinning a few bridal bouquets from time to time. This can be a fun way to bring your student's Pinterest inspirations to life.
Details
To begin this design, first lay out all of your flowers and greens you plan to use. Prepare them by stripping and leaves or foliage below the bloom off of the stem. Trim all of the flowers to a desirable length and have your ribbon or raffia ready to tie your design. To start piecing your design together, begin by placing one stem in between your thumb and pointer finger of your non-dominate hand. Place the next stem at a 90 degree angle to the first stem. Yes- this does seem off balance at first, but trust me, 90 degrees. As you place more stems in your hand, continue to turn your design in your hand 90 degrees every time you add a stem. Keep a moderately firm grip on the stems, but enough to let them move slightly as more are added. Keep adding until your design becomes even on all sides, and watch for blooms that sink down into your design. Tie firmly around the base of your blossoms. A true hand-tie should be able to stand up on its own due to the spiral created while spinning your design.
